Spring Stargazing

Come check out which stars and constellations dominate the spring nighttime sky! Learn how to identify each one, and enjoy some interesting facts about them. There may even be an especially bright planet to see! Star charts will be handed out for people to take home with them. This is an outdoor program, so it will have to be postponed or canceled if the skies are not clear.

Arbor Day Tree Giveaway

We will once again be hosting our annual seedling giveaway, so stop by the nature center and pick up your free seedling! This year’s species include Gray Dogwood, Hackberry, Norway Spruce, and Pin Oak. Quantities will be limited.

Spring Open House/Motus Tower Dedication

Join us for a Spring Open House at the Hanson Nature Center! The Center will be open, you'll be able to walk the trails, and we’ll have crafts for the kids. Perhaps best of all, we will be dedicating our new Motus Tower at 2:00 PM! Refreshments will also be served. It should be a wonderful way to enjoy a spring day!

The Hanson Nature Center will be open to the public. Come check out our displays, learn about our live animals, and walk the trails!

Free Fishing at Thorpe Park

All Iowa residents can fish for free June 5th-7th. So, if you've always wanted to try fishing, now may be the time! We'll be at Thorpe Park to loan you everything you need to cast a line, including poles, lures, tackle, bait, and even instruction. All you need to do is stop at the Lake Catherine boat dock anytime during the evening and we'll get you set up. We'll even have some handouts that you can take home with you, as well as activity sheets for the kids!

Critter Camp--Birds

Critter Camp is back! Join us for a week of fun with NIACC to kick off summer! Meet fascinating reptiles and amphibians face-to-face, catch and study bugs, go on nature hikes, and learn how to fish, for real fish! And of course, we are bringing back everyone’s favorite activity- Pond Critters! This week is all about exploration, learning, and a little less screen time. Have your own wild adventure at Critter Camp! On Monday, we'll learn all about birds at the Hanson Nature Center! The fee for the whole week is $9.00/child and regsitration is through NIACC.
