Beginning October 1st, Astech Corp will begin microsurfacing on various roads in Winnebago County totaling 28 miles. During construction traffic will be limited to one lane with a pilot car. The entire project is expected to take up to two weeks. Microsurfacing is a surface treatment for asphalt roads intended to extend the lift of the pavement by 5 to 7 years. The process involves a mixture of asphalt, cement, coarse sand, and rock applied to the road and struck off with a squeegee. The cost is about $30,000 per mile, which is about 10% the cost of more major rehabilitation.
